Find a wild place and begin to know it.
An afternoon group for children aged around nine to eleven, run by Ross with Tara de Jersey of WildGuernsey. Nature mentoring on Roots Field, alongside the John Muir Award at Guardian level.
The award is built around four things you do with a wild place, and they shape how the sessions run. Guardian level takes thirteen sessions, twenty-six hours on the land, so it carries across more than one half term.
Find a wild place and begin to know it.
Go deeper: its skills, seasons, creatures and weather.
Take practical care of the land and its wildlife.
Pass on what you’ve found to others.
These sessions are hosted by both of us. Ross brings the land and the nature mentoring; Tara brings her own knowledge and experience through WildGuernsey. Between us the group can go further than either would alone, which is what this age deserves.
The mentoring carries on alongside the award: the same attention to curiosity, friendship and place that runs through everything here.
Sessions run Saturday afternoons in term time, roughly four to seven a half term, booked as a half-termly block covering all sessions on offer. Payment secures the place. Coming to every session is strongly preferred, both for the award hours and because the group works best when it stays together. The group needs a minimum of eight children to run, and if weather forces a cancellation that session is refunded.
A small bag with a water bottle and a snack, and clothing for exposed clifftop: warm, windproof and thornproof, with boots that will stand up to mud, blackthorn, gorse and bramble. You’ll be told in advance if anyone in the group has an allergy.

Our aim is to get to know the children, for them to get to know one another, and to form their own connections with the nature on site, then to shape sessions around those curiosities.
The group needs eight children to run, so do get in touch early. Tell us your child’s age and which Saturdays suit.
