Roots Field on the south coast

A clifftop field at Torteval, looking out over the sea. It’s old family land, and it’s where every session happens, which is the point. The children aren’t visiting a venue; they’re returning to a place that becomes theirs.

What’s on the land

  • Two fire circles. An upper one by the valley viewpoint for calm, dry days, and a lower one sheltered near the wood store for wind and rain.
  • A wartime bunker and gun pit, long since softened by gorse and decades of weather.
  • A viewpoint at the top of the valley, out across the south coast cliffs.
  • A young hedge of saplings along the edge, planted to bring the field back.
  • Blackthorn, gorse and bramble, the honest, thorny cover this coast grows.

Weather decides a lot

It’s exposed up here. The wind makes the clifftop noticeably colder than anywhere inland, and where we meet on the day depends on it: the upper fire circle when it’s calm and dry, down towards the sheltered circle when it isn’t. That’s part of what the children learn. You read the day and adjust.

Sessions run in most weather. When conditions do force a cancellation, Nature Explorers bookings are credited to the following term and Wilderness Guardians bookings are refunded.

Finding it

Roots Field is off the Torteval coast road on Guernsey’s south coast, with parking on the land itself. It’s private land, so it isn’t signposted: full directions, parking instructions and a what3words location are sent to families once a place is confirmed.

Coming to see it

You’re welcome to visit before committing to a term. At the end of each full term there’s an open session for families and friends, and the free Children’s Forest Community Day each autumn is open to everyone.

Visit Roots Field

The best way to know if Roots Field suits your child is to stand on it. Ask about a visit, or come to the next open family session.
