Saturday mornings for ages 5 to 8
A Saturday morning children’s club in Guernsey for ages five to eight, led by Ross on Roots Field above the south coast cliffs. We return to the same places week after week, and the children come to know them properly.

What a morning looks like
There’s no fixed curriculum. Sessions grow out of what the children are drawn to: a nest found last week, a den half-built, a question about a beetle. Over a half term that might include:
- Wildlife games built around the creatures that actually live on the land
- Exploring the field, the valley viewpoint and the paths between them
- Den building, gathering the materials and working out what holds
- Fire lighting, and the patience it asks for
- Crafting with wood, and whatever projects the children bring with them
How it works
Sessions run on Saturday mornings in term time, roughly four to seven a half term. Booking is by half-termly block for all the sessions on offer. Coming to all of them matters, because the friendships and the familiarity with the land are built through repetition rather than one-off visits.
Parents and carers are welcome to stay and join in. If a session has to be cancelled for weather, it’s credited to your next booking. Children at the older end of this group often go on to join the Wilderness Guardians, which runs the same afternoon.
What to wear
This is exposed clifftop, and the wind makes it far colder up here than elsewhere on the island. Better a layer too many than one too few: warm, windproof and thornproof clothing, tough trousers, and boots with a solid grip. Blackthorn, gorse and bramble all grow here.
My aim is to get to know the children, for them to get to know one another, and to form their own connections with the nature on site: the trees, dens, sit spots, creatures, views and more.
Book a Saturday morning place
Places are held by half term. If the group is full, share your child’s availability and they’ll go in line for the next space.
